 11:00 AM – Andrea Becomes the First Tropical Cyclone of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season The National Hurricane Center has announced the formation of the f irst tropical cyclone of the 2025 Atlantic Hurricane Season, located near 36.6°N, 48.9°W in the North Atlantic. This system, which had been under observation for several days, has now developed the characteristics of a tropical storm and has been officially named Andrea—the first name on this year’s storm list. Andrea is currently tracking east-northeast at 17 mph, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph and a minimum central pressure of 1014 millibars. However, as it moves into cooler waters, Andrea is expected to weaken within the next 24 hours, making its time as a tropical storm relatively brief. At this time, Andrea poses no threat to any land areas.

In a display of Beijing’s growing military reach, the Chinese Navy sent two aircraft carriers into the Pacific Ocean, far from the country’s coast, for the first time to conduct exercises together, Japan’s defense minister, Gen Nakatani, said. Mr. Nakatani told reporters on Monday that the Chinese aircraft carriers were spotted launching and retrieving jet fighters out in the Pacific to the east of the Japanese island of Iwo Jima, about 750 miles south of Tokyo.  Vance Boelter, the suspect charged with killing a Minnesota state lawmaker and her husband and wounding a second lawmaker and his wife, had an arsenal of weapons and a hit list in his vehicle, according to court documents.  Boelter, 57, allegedly posed as a police officer and drove a Ford SUV, registered in his name, equipped with police lights to carry out the shootings of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, early Saturday morning after allegedly shooting State Sen. John Hoffman, also a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, in their nearby Champlin home.  Reportedly, Boelter left the fake police vehicle at the crime scene in Brooklyn Park after exchanging gunfire with police and escaping.
