On Sunday afternoon, the Iranian capital Tehran was hit hard by a barrage of airstrikes by the Israeli Air Force, continuing a campaign that has been going on for several days to target Iran's nuclear program and military industrial installations.

An extraordinary evacuation notice was given by the Israeli military, encouraging Iranian residents to flee areas surrounding weapons manufacturing centres, just hours before the strikes, according to The Times of Israel.

Anyone in the vicinity of military installations is strongly encouraged to leave "immediately" in response to a warning from the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) posted in Persian and Arabic on X (formerly Twitter).

Colonel Avichay Adraee, an IDF spokesman who spoke Arabic, issued a command to "evacuate these areas and not return until further notice" to anyone found or anticipated to be in or near military weapons manufacturing facilities or the institutions that support them.

The spokesperson for the IDF in Persian, Master Sgt. (res.) Kamal Penhasi, conveyed a similar statement. Reports indicate that the strikes on Sunday not only hit the capital of Iran, but also other military locations in the city of Shiraz in the south of the country.

Tensions have been increasing over Iran's nuclear aspirations and its backing for regional militant organisations opposed to Israel, and the Israeli Defence Forces' (IDF) ongoing operation marks the third day of Israeli attacks on Iranian territory.
